“We respect and support Noelia’s decision to step down from her duties,” the Miss USA pageant said in a statement following Voigt’s announcement. “No woman has ever resigned as Miss USA or as Miss Teen USA, and she’s lost both of them in 48 hours,” he said. And according to Engelhardt, they were far from the only members of the Miss USA organization to depart. Kyle Terada/USA Today Sports/ReutersOn May 9, the Miss USA pageant announced that Savannah Gankiewicz, Miss Hawaii USA 2023 and first-runner up to Voigt at the 2023 Miss USA pageant, would be taking over the national title and its responsibilities.

How American carmakers lost ground in China
  + stars: | 2024-05-11 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
American automakers and their non-Chinese counterparts are fighting an existential battle, as local rivals in China outpace them. GM's sales in China, including those of joint ventures it maintains in the country, have fallen from a high of 4 million vehicles in 2017 to 2.1 million in 2023. Several factors have contributed to the decline of U.S. automakers in China. That's precisely why American automakers shouldn't give up on China despite the U.S. companies' sales setbacks, according to Bill Russo, a former Chrysler executive who runs Automobility, a consulting firm in Shanghai. "If you don't compete in China, then what are you going to do when China shows up in your backyard?"

Hybrid sales are booming in the US. In his latest earnings report, the company blamed demand for hybrid vehicles for depressing global EV sales. "We believe this is not the right strategy, and electric vehicles will ultimately dominate the market," he added. "A lot of hybrid electric vehicles now are not far off from their internal combustion engine alternatives. "What we've seen historically is that when gas prices rise, hybrid electric vehicle price or acquisitions rise as well," he told BI.

Can Your Investment Portfolio Reflect Your Values?

The protests roiling college campuses are filled with all sorts of demands, but many of them have one thing in common: money. Many pro-Palestinian protesters want their school’s endowments to pull money from investments in companies that have financial ties to Israel. We all want to live our values and have our colleges, employers and communities do so, too. We saw similar protests in the 1970s and ’80s with South Africa and in the continuing debate over climate change. Students, especially, can learn a lot about investing, governance and complexity through trying to influence their schools.

So says Jensen Huang, who co-founded computer chip company Nvidia with fellow engineers Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem from a Denny's booth in 1993. None of us knew how to do anything," Huang recently told "60 Minutes" about the origins of the company. Today, Huang has been Nvidia's CEO for more than three decades, and he's grown the company — through ups and downs — into a $2.2 trillion tech giant that's helping to power the artificial intelligence boom. The co-founders had never run a business before, but Huang — a microprocessor designer — believed they could build a graphics processing unit (GPU) that would revolutionize video games and computer graphics, he said. If Huang could go back to 1993 and do it all again, he'd probably bail on Nvidia, he told the "Acquired" podcast in October 2023.

Average millennial wealth doubled between 2019 and 2023, according to an analysis from the Center for American Progress. New York CNN —Big Tech is racing to address the stream of A.I.-generated images inundating social media platforms before the machine-crafted renderings further contaminate the information space. TikTok announced on Thursday that it will begin labeling A.I.-generated content. (Notably, Elon Musk’s X has not announced any plans to label A.I.-generated content.) Social media giants have reams of rules prohibiting certain content on their platforms, but history has repeatedly shown that they have often failed to adequately enforce them and allowed malicious content to spread to the masses before taking action. That poor record doesn’t inspire much confidence as A.I.-created images increasingly bombard the information environment — particularly as the U.S. hurtles toward an unprecedented election with democracy itself at stake.

Opinion: Why Apple’s iPad ad hit such a nerve

Actors, directors, writers and academics expressed outrage at the Apple ad. Whatever their personal or political allegiances, many college students are seeing their experience on campus influenced by the Israel-Hamas war. Saltz: Parents can talk to their kids, but the talking needs to be more in the question format than in the lecture format. And so, people are having difficulty maintaining a friendship if they now somehow feel they’re not on the same team. Many of the kids out there doing the protests are not saying anything antisemitic. According to research published last year by Pew Research Center, men who have children out-earn childless men. It is unfortunate that President Biden chose to announce his pause of some weapons sales to Israel while on a political campaign swing through Wisconsin. I use that word — “unfortunate” — not because I don’t understand why Biden did so, but because the move has enabled Benjamin Netanyahu to deflect attention from the fact that the most dangerous leader threatening Israel today is not Biden but Bibi. Netanyahu’s policies have not and will not produce a sustainable victory in Gaza, cannot secure Israel against its greatest existential threat — Iran — and are endangering world Jewry and undermining America’s broader Middle East strategic needs and goals. That is the real source of tension between Washington and Jerusalem today. It is not Biden’s temporary hold on sending Israel a fresh supply of 2,000-pound bombs and some other offensive weapons — which Biden has been warning Israel for months that he would do if Israel attempted to pulverize Rafah, the way that it did Gaza City and Khan Younis, without an evacuation of civilians.
